Springdale was absorbed into the City of Stamford on
1949. Early industry consisted of farming, stone masonry and the famous Machlett
Laboratories (see below). It boosts an independent Fire Department and is home
to a very active large indoor Twin Skating Rinks Complex.
Machlett Laboratories
In 1934, Machlett Laboratories moved from New York to Springdale where it was known as a leader in the
research and development of x-ray technology and equipment.
Raymond Machlett, who ran the company, was the son of Robert Machlett.
Robert Machlett created the first practical x-ray tube in America and
devoted his life to perfecting the device. Many subsequent advances in
the technology, such as water-cooled tubes and x-ray proof tubes were
introduced by Machlett. As a result of his work with x-rays, Robert Machlett
fell victim to the effects of radiation and died in 1926. His son Raymond,
however, continued in the field and perfected the process of producing
tubes filled with rarefied gasses free from impurities.
