More Charlton History Tidbits
Did You Know?
There was a Toll House and later a Dairy Store on Stage Road?
- Where Charlton Heights school stands there was once a huge barn. It was torn down sometime after 1927 and in 1956 this tract of land was sold to the BHBL School District to build the Charlton Heights Elementary school.
- Back in 1838, diagonally south where the road dips over a small stream there was a toll bridge. Folks were charged when traveling over this Glenville/Charlton border.
- In the late 50s - early 60s there was a working small dairy where the pump house now stands. My sisters remember going over there for Popsicles as a school excursion!

Tucker House / Tucker Heights
- Growing up in this neighborhood was kind of neat as it was built in an orchard. We all had apple trees in our yards! Of course the Tucker House on Stage Road always had a special aura to it. We knew it was the centerpiece of the old orchard and Cornelia Ave was named after old man Tucker’s wife Cornelia.
Cupola Houses
- Originally on houses near to sea for families to spot when the loved ones returned by ship from long voyages, cupolas on some of the old historic farm houses in this area were used to check on farm help working in the fields.
About the Charlton Heights Elementary School
- The first schoolhouse for District #7 was located as early as 1816 at the east corner of Valentine Road, where Valentine Road used to meet Stage Road.
- In 1982, the Charlton Heights PTA was named as "Most Outstanding" in New York State.
